The J4, a heavy-armour infantry support aircraft, was the first military metal aircraft to go into large-scale production. It was developed in 1916 by Professor Junkers for the German Heeresverwaltung (High Command). The maiden flight, which took place on January 28, 1917, aroused such enthusiasm that Junkers received an order from the German Army to build 50 examples of the heavy-armour J4, its military code was J1. By August 1917, the troops on the front were already taking delivery of the first series-built J4s.
