The Shorthorn was designed by Maurice Farman, one of the 3 Farman brothers (who were all English, contrary to much popular belief), and could fly at 12,000' for about 3 hours and was introduced into service in 1914. Huge numbers were built for France (who had 37 Squadrons using them at one point), UK and Italy. The advent of the Fokker Eindekker made it obsolete for front line action. Until mid-1915 it was the main allied combat aircraft and it remained in use as a trainer until 1918. Shorthorns were made in huge quantities in most allied countries.
